Still Rollin afta 20 years

I woke this morning to rain RAIN RAINNNNNNNNNNNNNN ... gone were my plans of a lovely bikeride/walk. So I stayed in bed and watched an ABBA doco hehe ... was singing away and didnt surface from the bedroom until just before 10:00am! Finally did some housework ... the housework I was supposed to have done in the weekend but couldnt be arsed. Tidied up the computer room, filed all the paperwork and loaded more music onto my MP3 player. YAY!

I also spoke to my Mother-inlaw on the phone and we had a good ole catchup. She was taking my nephew to roller skating in the afternoon and I said ... "omg I havent roller skated in years, gee that would be fun" and she said ... WHY DONT YOU COME ALONG?

My first reaction was ... I dont think so! but I'll call ya back and let you know.

Craig was happy to have a home day so I thought ... bugger it ... WHY NOT? Good excuse to have a laugh, break my arm and get some exercise in also.

Got to the rink and when I went to pay my $4 (which includes the bootskate hire!) they said not to worry about it and go pick out my skates. My sisterinlaw has a family pass and my M-I-L was working behind the sweet counter. So I got my nephew to help me pick out the coolest skates for Auntie Leenie to wear - and we went and sat down. I just sat there for a bit thinking ... I must be mad! I havent skated since I was about 15! I put my skates on and thought ... oh god what am I thinkinggggggggggggggg? LOL and then I decided right now or never and stood up!

Back in the "ole days" when I did skate, I couldnt do any fancy stuff, but I was pretty quick gettnig around the rink and I could do basic turns and roll backwards, stuff like that. So I gingerly took a few rolls forward and spent some time getting use to the balance factor again. There was a flat practice area next to the rink, so I played around on that for about 10 minutes until I felt confident enough to get onto the rink. My niece and nephew thought it was COOL to see Aunty Leenie on the rink and my sisterinlaw was in a bit of shock I think LOL However I spent the first half hour just slowly going around and around and around getting used to the balance again. By the end of the two and half hours I had it licked and I was motoring along quite happily, turning and going backwards, doing scissors and wide turns and of course stopping when I needed to. It was really about balance and confidence. Before getting on the rink I had the negative Leenie telling herself she'd look stupid being the big fat blob falling over on the rink, but I have to say, I actually felt quite slim and fit and ... NORMAL and YOUNG again. Flying around that rink bought back some wonderful childhood memories of roller skating and the fun I used to have with my friends while doing it.

So after 20 years, Leenie rolls again! I also won one of the games and got a free pass in next time! Public skating sessions are every Saturday from 3:00pm-5:00pm and over winter I think it'll be a perfect supplement to my exercise regime! Boy did I work up a sweat today! It wasnt hard on my legs or lungs and it was a great workout for my cheek muscles cos I couldnt stop smiling - it was so much bloody fun!

How cool :)

What a great form of exercise. Lots of points burned! Great idea. As for me, I have absolutely no balance and cant really even ride a push bike.
:o)

Yes, I know KFC is still there - in fact, so is the greengrocer my Mum went to and the Fish and Chip shop etc. Another memory... I used to roller skate and a kid and my brother and sister in law were the NZ National champions. In fact, my brother was the first in NZ to do a triple jump! Ahh.. the old days...
